Dr. Chris Baker, PhD, manager of the UCSF Core Immunology Lab (CIL) was awarded the President’s Award of Excellence at CYTO 2016 in Seattle for his presentation "Detection of HIV RNA Expression in Peripheral Blood from HIV-Infected Study Participants by RNAflow Cytomety”. Chris described how RNAFlow Cytometry can be used to detect low level RNA transcripts such as HIV RNA in T cells from HIV-infected patients. Chris and others in CIL have been working to increase the sensitivity of the method which may now amplify a single molecule of RNA up to 54,000 times. Chris described strategies to detect HIV in latently infected cells where the virus can hide out and go undetected for many years. He also discussed how this assay could be used in the study of how to reverse HIV latency and cure HIV infection.

CYTO is the annual meeting of the International Society for the Advancement of Cytometry and explores the art and science of cytometry from Bench to Bedside.
